MHS Members Help Guide Historic Somerville-Medford Bike Ride

Members of the Medford Historical Society and the Royall House Association helped to bring Medford history to life for over 80 bike riders during the Somerville-Medford Historic Bicycle Tour on June 23. The bike ride has been organized by the Somerville Historic Preservation Commission since 2002.

In the past five years, the tour has concentrated on Somerville history, but this year the organizers added Medford to the itinerary. The three-hour tour began at Somerville City Hall and the tour organizers Brandon Wilson, Dick Bauer, and Ron Newman guided the Somerville portion of the tour. When the riders reached Medford, Medford Historical Society representatives Will Tenney and Sue Gerould took over tour guide duty.

In Medford, the stops on the tour included the Tufts Park area that used to house brickyards and Medford's Victorian race tracks. The group also stopped near the site of the Middlesex Canal, and along the river where Medford's shipbuilding industry was based.

The riders were treated to short tour of the Royall House by Royal Association president Tom Lincoln, and also paused outside the Medford Historical Society. After a jaunt through Medford Square's history and architecture, the group stopped at Grace Episcopal Church for a short talk by Warren Ramirez. Finally the pack headed back towards Somerville with one last Medford stop at Tufts University. The tour was a hit with all of the participants, and the organizers hope to extend the tour territory in the coming years.
