Of the People Photo

February 27 through April 26, 2009

Exhibit hours through April 26

Sundays Noon to 4:00 p.m.

This year marks the inauguration of our nation's first African-American president and the 200th birthday of Abraham Lincoln. From February 27 through April 26 MHS is commemorating these events by a photographic exhibition titled Of the People: Faces of the Civil War.

The exhibition focuses on portraits because of their immediacy and the important stories they tell of the men, women, children, freed slaves, immigrants and Native Americans who fought and were profoundly affected by the American Civil War – the most calamitous period in our shared history.

To accompany this exhibition MHS is sponsoring a public lecture series in partnership with the West Medford Community Center, the Medford Public Library and the Royall House. Each lecture explores different aspects of the Civil War and its aftermath.

Below is the current calendar of events. Please check this site periodically for updates.

Conserving a Cultural Treasure

The Medford Historical Society is working to improve the conservation and display environments of its entire Civil War photo collection. We are also committed to digitizing and cataloging the collection to make it publicly accessible.

If you would like to donate to these efforts, you can do so through the mail or by using one of the links below. Our goal is to raise a total of $30,000 by the end of 2009.

We are a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) organization. All contributions to this conservation effort are tax deductible and sincerely appreciated.

Please feel to contact us if you would like more information on the Civil War collection or the conservation project!
